Volkswagen AG’s SEAT unit expects to introduce its first all-electric car, a small hatchback, in 2020.
The car, which will ride on VW’s “MEB” platform for electrics, targets a driving range of 500 km (311 miles). The Spanish carmaker did not reveal the model’s name, but media reports say it may be called E-Born in reference to Barcelona’s trendy El Born area.
The EV will be produced at VW’s plant in Zwickau, Germany, the factory VW is preparing to make vehicles for its all-electric I.D. sub-brand.
SEAT tells reporters in Madrid that it will need a second EV by 2025 to meet the EU’s carbon dioxide emission standards by then. The company says it has not decided on the vehicle’s body style.
