Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus unit says its cumulative sales of hybrid vehicles surpassed 1 million units in March.
The milestone vehicle, a NX 300h compact crossover, was sold to a customer in Milan, Italy. The luxury brand launched its first hybrid vehicle, the RX 400h crossover, in 2006.
Lexus now offers 10 hybrids worldwide, including the new LC 500h coupe. A new three-row RX hybrid will be added in 2018.
The RX has accounted for more than one-third of Lexus hybrid sales, with a cumulative total of 335,000 units. The next most popular models are hybrid variants of the CT hatchback (267,000 vehicles sold) and ES sedan (118,000).
The largest market for Lexus hybrids is North America, where sales since 2005 have totaled 345,500 units. Europe and Japan accounted for 237,500 and 225,000 of the brand’s overall hybrid sales, respectively. But last month Europe claimed the top spot with sales of 40,600 Lexus hybrids. This compares with 38,500 units in North America and 31,400 in Europe.
