The next Phantom ultra-luxury sedan from BMW AG's Rolls-Royce Motor Cars unit will ride on a new aluminum-based architecture, Automobile reports. Earlier this year the marque said it was working on a modular aluminum platform that will carry several new models, starting with the brand's upcoming crossover/SUV due next year.
Rolls-Royce will continue to offer a standard and long-wheelbase version of the flagship Phantom, according to Automobile. But it says the company will discontinue coupe and convertible variants due to falling demand.
The second-generation car will be about the same size as the current model, according to the report. The lone engine at launch will be an unspecified V-12 co-developed with parent BMW, Automobile says, with a plug-in hybrid possibly added later.
Styling upgrades will include a more "imposing" look with a taller front end, rectangular headlights and a more aggressive rear roofline.
