Tesla Motors Inc. says it has collected refundable $1,000 deposits from more than 325,000 would-be buyers of its Model 3 electric sedan since it unveiled the car a week ago.
Strong sales of the $35,000 EV, which won’t go into production for at least 18 months, is considered crucial to Tesla’s long-term viability. The company plans to introduce the car in California first, then roll it out across the U.S. and into foreign markets.
Tesla has divulged few details about the Model 3 and is likely to make several adjustments to the car before it goes on sale. The company promises a typical driving range of 215 miles per charge. It is certain to roll out several iterations of the base car, including an all-wheel-drive model and at least one high-performance edition.
A compact crossover that shares the Model 3’s chassis and powertrain is likely to be added in about 2020.
