Porsche AG has decided to offer its upcoming compact sport sedan exclusively as an electric model, says Auto Motor und Sport.
The German enthusiast magazine says Porsche executives have concluded a piston-powered model (nicknamed Panamera Junior, or Pajun) would face too much competition from such models as the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
The Pajun is expected to debut in 2018 or 2019. By then, Porsche hopes battery performance will have advanced enough to give the new car a range of more than 200 miles per charge, according to AM&S.
Buyers can get that range now in the Panamera-sized $71,000 Model S luxury EV offered by Tesla Motors Inc. The Pajun, at about 4.6 meters in length, will be 40 cm shorter than both those cars about the size of the upcoming $35,000 Tesla Model 3 sedan.
