General Motors Co.'s Opel unit intends to introduce an electric car in Europe about three years from now to help it meet tougher EU rules on carbon dioxide emissions, Automobilwoche reports.

The German trade newspaper cites Peter Kuespert, who heads Opel sales, as saying upcoming carbon dioxide emission standards are forcing the company to add alternative power sources to its lineup.

The new EV will be smaller and considerably less expensive than Opel's €38,000 Ampera extended-range hybrid, according to the report. Automobilwoche says the company also will lower its average CO2 emissions by expanding its small-car lineup to include a sub-€10,000 minicar by 2015.
