Tesla Inc. will retain its position as the world’s largest maker of electric cars next year but plunge to seventh behind well-established vehicle manufacturers by 2021, predicts PA Consulting Group.
The London-based global consultancy ranks EV producers in terms of six success factors: strategy, technology, battery cost, charging technology and third-party services, supplier network, leadership and financial results.
In 2019, the ranking will be topped by Tesla, followed in declining order by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, BMW, Hyundai-Kia, Daimler, Volvo and Volkswagen, according to PA.
But in 2021, the front-runners on PA’s rankings will be led by Daimler, BMW, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, VW, Volvo and Toyota. By then, Tesla will have dropped behind all six carmakers.
PA’s ranking says General Motors, currently ranked 9th, and Jaguar Land Rover in 10th, will swap positions over the next three years. Ford and Fiat-Chrysler, currently in 12th and 13th position, will still be in those spots in 2021, according to the analysis.
