Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has decided to fit the next-generation Jeep Wrangler SUV with an aluminum body, according to Automotive News, which cites unnamed sources.
But FCA also intends to retain the vehicle's steel frame chassis, which suggests production will remain in Toledo, Ohio. CEO Sergio Marchionne created a furor earlier this month by indicating the new model would have to be built elsewhere if it switched to a carlike unitized architecture.
AN notes that Toledo agreed a week ago to buy 32 acres of land adjacent to the city's Jeep plant. That suggests a plant expansion may be planned, although neither the city nor company are talking.
