Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is developing a hybrid-electric sports car with a mid-engine layout to replace its current F-Type coupe, sources tell Auto Express.
The new model is due to launch in mid-2022 and could be called the J-Type, according to the British enthusiast magazine. An all-electric variant could be added around 2025.
Engineers reportedly are benchmarking the Acura NSX supercar as Jaguar aims to move further upmarket with the new coupe. Whereas the current F-Type (pictured) competes against the Porsche 911, the J-Type is expected to be pitted against the Audi R8 and McLaren 570S, Auto Express says.
The magazine says the J-Type hybrid likely will team a V-6 engine with at least two electric motors. The mid-engine design will allow the company to take a clean-sheet-of-paper approach to the vehicle’s design.
Jaguar previously said it will offer hybrid and/or all-electric powertrain options on all new models beginning in 2020. The company launched its first all-electric model, the I-Pace crossover, this summer.
