Report: Ghosn Trial Will Begin in September

Carlos Ghosn’s trial on charges of underreporting his financial compensation when he was chairman of Nissan Motor Co. will start in September, according to Japan public TV broadcaster NHK.
Sources at the Tokyo District Court tell the network that prosecutors and Ghosn’s attorneys will hold their first meeting on May 23 to discuss the charges.
Ghosn, who was released on restrictive bail on March 3 after more than 100 days in jail, insists he is innocent of all wrongdoing. He has described the charges as part of a treasonous plot by Nissan executives to oust him.
Prosecutors claim Ghosn collected 31.4 billion yen ($284 million) over 19 years but failed to report much of its compensation beginning nine years ago, NHK says. Previous reports say Ghosn failed to declare some 8 billion yen ($82 million) in deferred compensation between 2010 and 2017.
Prosecutors also are likely to claim Ghosn enlisted aides to lobby against the new reporting requirement, and then to find ways for him to receive the unreported payout after he retired, according to NHK.
