Volvo Car Corp. is preparing to ship Chinese-made sport sedans to the U.S. as soon as the end of next year, Automotive News China reports.
An unnamed Volvo executive tells the online newspaper that Volvo plans to export a long-wheelbase version of its S60 sport sedan to the American market at annual volumes of 10,000 units.
Volvo also intends annual shipments of a few thousand XC90 crossover vehicles from China to Russia in the same timeframe, according to ANC's source. The report says Volvo may export vehicles to markets in southeast Asia too.
Volvo confirms plans to export Chinese-made vehicles, but it says the timing and markets haven't been decided.
When Geely acquired Volvo Cars from Ford Motor Co. four years ago, it set a goal of doubling the brand's worldwide sales to 800,000 units by 2020, including 200,000 in China.
Last year Volvo's sales in the U.S. fell 10% to 42,300 units, according to Autodata Corp. Demand in the first five months of this year dropped another 10%.
