Renesas Electronics Corp., which supplies automotive microcontrollers, says it will form an alliance with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
Renesas plans to provide details about the tie-up on Monday. Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun says the Japanese company probably will contract out chip production to TSMC.
Renesas drew global attention last year in the aftermath of Japan's earthquake and tsunami, when damage to a crucial chip factory snarled auto output worldwide.
The company has struggled since then with the strong yen and aggressive competition. Yomiuri reported earlier this week that Renesas would fire 6,000 workers and try to raise 50 billion yen ($628 million) in new capital. Ninety percent of the company's stock is owned by three companies: Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric and NEC.
