Next month Renault SA plans to begin exporting its popular entry-level Kwid crossover from India to Brazil, the Mumbai-based Economic Times reports.
Renault India CEO Sumit Sawhney tells reporters an unspecified number of the small cars will be shipped as semi-knocked-down kits from its factory in Oragadam.
Introduced four months ago, the Kwid has become a big seller in India. The company reports orders for 100,000 units and a delivery backlog of five months or more.
Sawhney says Renault is hiking output at the Oragadam plant, currently set at about 6,000 units per month. Renault shares the facility with alliance partner Nissan Motor Co., to meet demand.
Sawhney says Renault hopes to increase its share of the Indian market to 5% by the second half of 2016 from 4.5% in December. He predicts the company will push its total sales in India above 100,000 this year from 54,000 vehicles in 2015.
