A new joint venture announced earlier today by the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Dongfeng Motor Group aims to begin making an all-electric SUV/crossover in China in 2019.
The venture, eGT New Energy Automotive Co, is owned 50% by Dongfeng and 25% each by Renault and Nissan.
The planned vehicle will be a small SUV. A Reuters source says the car likely will be based on the platform that carries India’s conventionally powered Renault Kwid SUV. That model went into production in India in late 2015.
Last week Ford Motor Co. announced a similarly tasked venture with China’s Anhui Zotye Automobile Co. Ford’s partnership will market EVs in the country only under a domestic brand.
Others such partnerships are likely to follow as foreign carmakers scramble to meet China’s plan to impose sales quotas for EVs beginning next year. The government policy demands that at least 8% of a carmaker’s sales in China next year be powered by all-electric or plug-in hybrid powertrains. The proportion rises to 12% by 2020.
