Subaru Corp.’s redesigned Outback crossover vehicle features subtle styling changes, a revamped interior and an optional 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine.

Due later this year, the sixth-generation model is built on Subaru’s flexible global platform. The architecture also carries the latest Ascent, Crosstrek, Forester, Legacy and Impreza models.

Exterior design changes include bulkier fenders, LED fog lights and a hands-free power liftgate. The 2020 Outback also gets an updated version of Subaru’s integrated roof rack. In addition to adjustable rails that swing inward to serve as their cross bars, the new design adds support arches and makes it easier to access tie-down points, according to the carmaker.

The interior is highlighted by a 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen. The vertically oriented unit also will be used in the 2020 Legacy sedan. Wi-fi connectivity is optional.

The new 2.4-liter “boxer” engine marks the first time the Outback has offered a turbocharged mill since 2009. The engine, which also is used in the Ascent crossover and upcoming next-generation Legacy sedan, kicks out 260 hp and 277 pound-feet of torque. Towing capacity with the engine is listed at 3,500 lbs, the most ever for an Outback.

The new turbocharged engine and the carryover 2.5-liter 4-cylinder unit each are paired with a continuously variable transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The 2.5-liter boxer engine is now tuned to generate 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque, compared with 175 hp and 174 lb-ft for the outgoing model. The company is dropping the current Outback’s 3.6-liter 6-cylinder engine.

Subaru unveiled the 2020 Outback at this week’s New York auto show. Pricing will be announced later.
