PSA Group backs the idea of its newly acquired Opel brand becoming a maker of electric cars, but only if doing so is profitable.

CEO Carlos Tavares tells Bild am Sonntag that PSA will give Opel access to its electrification technologies to develop its own EVs. But he says there would a “big problem” if the EVs that result don’t sell well enough to contribute to Opel’s profitability.

Opel had been developing plans to become an all-electric carmaker before General Motors Co. sold the chronically unprofitable unit to PSA in August, sources to a report in February by Manager Magazin. The company sold modest numbers of Ampera hybrids, a European variant of GM’s Chevrolet Volt hybrid, and Ampera-e all-electric sedans based on the Chevy Bolt EV.
