Pruitt Resigns as Head of EPA
Scott Pruitt has resigned as administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency amid more than a dozen investigations into claims of ethical lapses, violations of spending laws and the misuse of his staff.

Scott Pruitt has resigned as administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency amid more than a dozen investigations into claims of ethical lapses, violations of spending laws and the misuse of his staff.
At the EPA, Pruitt led a strong effort to roll back or eliminate regulations that the Trump administration said had overstepped the agency’s mandate. Critics claimed Pruitt pandered to business and industry at the expense of the environment.
President Donald Trump praised Pruitt for doing an “outstanding job” at the EPA. Trump also announced that Andrew Wheeler, the agency’s deputy director, will become acting administrator on Monday.
Wheeler, a skeptic of climate change, spent the last 10 years lobbying on behalf of coal, mining and other energy companies. Previously he was an EPA staffer who received the agency’s Bronze Metal three times. He later spent six years as chief counsel for the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works.
