Protean Electric Inc. has formed a partnership with China's FAW-Volkswagen Automotive Co. Ltd. to develop an electric test vehicle equipped with the company's in-hub electric drive system.
The two companies expect to complete work within a year on a rear-drive electric version of VW's new Bora small sedan.
Earlier this year the Auburn Hills, Mich.-based company said it was establishing capacity in Liyang, China, to make prototypes of the technology and in 2014 demonstrate the ability to mass produce the system.
The company's direct drive motors can replace a vehicle's conventional two- or four-wheel-drive powertrain or quickly turn a two-wheel-drive powertrain into a four-wheel-drive hybrid system. Each in-wheel motor weighs 75 lbs and can produce 100 hp of peak power.
