BMW AG has begun output of its all-electric i3 city car in Leipzig, Germany, where the company invested $540 million (€400 million) for the production of its new "I" line of electrified models.
The five-door hatchback marks the auto industry's first attempt at volume production of a vehicle made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. BMW says the 2,800-lb car, which rides on an aluminum chassis, can zip from zero to 100 kph in 7.2 seconds and drive 80-100 miles per charge.
Sales of the i3 will begin in Europe in November and spread to other markets in early 2014. The i3 will sell in the U.S. for $42,300 before incentives.
