Porsche AG will finally introduce the production version of its 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid supercar on Sept. 10 at the Frankfurt auto show.

The $1 million 918 Spyder, which debuted in prototype form at the Geneva auto show three years ago, combines extreme performance with impressive fuel economy, which Porsche says comes in at 3 liters/100 km (78 mpg) on the European test cycle. The car goes on sale late this year.

The 918 Spyder boasts a total output of 887 hp from a mid-mounted 4.6-liter V-8 gasoline engine and two electric motors (one at each axle), enabling 0-60 mph sprints in less than 2.8 seconds.

The 918 Spyder features a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic monocoque, adaptive aerodynamics, rear-axle steering and an exhaust system that vents through the top of the bodywork.
