Porsche AG is working with chipmaker Nvidia Corp. and video game specialist Epic Games Inc. on a new design tool that could significantly speed vehicle development and improve real-time modeling capabilities.

The partners demonstrated the technology with a “Speed of Light” video of the Porsche 911 Speedster concept at this week’s SIGGRAPH tech conference in Vancouver. The concept vehicle was rendered with Nvidia’s next-generation “ray-tracing” Turing Quatro RTX graphic processing unit teamed with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine design platform.

The combination allows designers to more accurately see how light plays off different surfaces at various angles. The video highlight how the system allows designers to change the position and intensity of light sources to create photo-realistic lighting, reflection, shadows, translucency, diffused illumination and textured lighting, according to the developers.

Modeling such lighting effects previously would have required the use of as many as 500 computers, according to Porsche. The new system can be done in real-time using one computer equipped with two Turing Quatro RTX GPU cards.

The three partners have been working together for two years on the technology. In addition to the 911 Speedster concept and virtual reality gaming applications, Porsche has begun using the tool to help develop the next-generation production 911.
