Porsche AG is likely to switch its best-selling models to fully electric powertrains within seven years, according to its chief financial officer.
CFO Lutz Meschke notes that the company will need to sell a high ratio of zero-emission models to meet future emission targets. He also tells reporters that Porsche won’t be able to afford to offer both piston- and battery-powered iterations of most vehicles.
Meschke plans to debut its first all-electric model—the 911-like Taycan (originally called Mission E)—late next year. That car (pictured) is likely to be followed by an electric SUV/crossover by 2022. Meschke says the next-generation Panamera sport sedan, Cayenne midsize SUV and virtually all other four-door models will follow as electric-only models.
Porsche also has determined the feasibility of switching from 4-cylinder engines to electric powertrains for its Cayman and Boxster sports cars, according to Meschke. Automotive News Europe notes that Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has indicated that the company’s iconic 911 sports car may eventually get a plug-in hybrid powertrain but won’t go fully electric.
