Porsche AG says its upcoming Porsche 918 Spyder will be even quicker than expected, thanks to new tweaks to the supercar's plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The latest track tests confirm the car, equipped with the optional Weissach performance package, can zip from zero to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds, 0.2 seconds quicker than originally estimated. And at 7.2 seconds, the car also is half a second quicker to 200 kph (124 mph).

Porsche says the production 918 Spyder will be able to hit 300 kph (186 mph) in 19.9 seconds 2.1 seconds sooner than previously estimated.

The company says the car will be quicker than expected when operating in all-electric mode too. The car can reach 100 kph in 6.2 seconds compared with 6.9 seconds originally predicted.

The 918 Spyder is equipped with a 608-hp 4.6-liter V-8 and two electric motors (one for each axle) that boost combined output to 887 hp. Porsche estimates the car will have a fuel economy rating on the European test cycle of 3.3-3.0 liters/100 km (71-78 mpg).

The Porsche supercar will go on sale in early 2014, starting at $845,000.
