Honda Motor Co. says the plug-in hybrid version of its 2018 Clarity sedan can travel 47 miles in electric-only mode, farther than any other midsize plug-in tested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Due at dealerships nationwide later this year, the Clarity plug-in hybrid received an EPA fuel economy equivalent rating of 110 mpg and an overall driving range of 340 miles. The vehicle’s 1.5-liter Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder engine is rated at 44/40/42 mpg (city/highway/combined).
The hybrid system teams the 4-cylinder engine with an electric motor that produces 181 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. The 17-kWh battery pack can be recharged in 2.5 hours by a 240-volt source.
Honda launched the fuel cell version of the Clarity last December and added an all-electric variant last month. The plug-in hybrid model is expected to be the sales leader among the three.
