Delphi Automotive LLP and PureDepth Inc. will demonstrate a new 3-D instrument panel display in a Ford Mustang GTO concept car next month at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The system uses PureDepth’s multi-layered graphics technology, which the New Zealand-based company developed for movies, slot machines and video arcade games. The technology combines stacked 2-D image planes with advanced optical and other imaging software. The resulting high definition and enhanced resolution reduces eye strain and makes it easier for drivers to read displays, according to the partners.
It took about a year to adapt the technology for automotive applications, reports the Detroit Free Press. In the last month alone, the “crispness” of the graphics has improved 50%, Delphi officials tell the newspaper, comparing the quality to that of a high-definition television.
Ford hasn’t committed to using the system in a production vehicle, the Free Press says. But it notes that Delphi aims to commercialize the technology in the “near future.”

Honda Re-Imagines and Re-Engineers the Ridgeline
When Honda announced the first-generation Ridgeline in 2005, it opened the press release describing the vehicle: “The Honda Ridgeline re-defines what a truck can be with its true half-ton bed payload capability, an interior similar to a full-size truck and the exterior length of a compact truck.” And all that said, people simply couldn’t get over the way there is a diagonal piece, a sail-shaped buttress, between the cab and the box.
