General Motors Co.'s Adam Opel unit estimates that the previously announced bevy of new engines and transmissions it will introduce by 2020 will reduce the average carbon dioxide emissions from its vehicles 27%.
The European Commission requires carmakers to achieve a fleet average CO2 emission level of 130 g/km by 2015 and 95 g/km by the end of the decade. Opel's CO2 average in 2011 was 134 g/km, according to the European Environment Agency.
Opel says it will add 13 new engines and an array of new 5-, 6- and 8-speed transmissions over the next seven years.
The lineup will include three variants of a new 1.6-liter diesel rated at 95 hp, 136 hp and 160 hp, plus five new three- and four-cylinder gasoline engines that range in displacement from 1.0 liters to 1.6 liters.
