Adam Opel AG says it intends to add a successor to the Ampera extended-range hybrid when General Motors Co. discontinues the slow-selling model a year from now.
The Ampera was named European Car of the Year in 2012. But demand for the €38,000 car has dropped by roughly two-thirds since then.
Opel says it will "definitely" introduce a replacement product "in the electric vehicle segment" sometime between this year and 2018. The company suggests the successor car will have a lower price but has offered no further details.
The Ampera is a variant of the Chevrolet Volt, which has been relatively successful in the American market. GM produces both models at a plant in the Detroit area. The factory added a third variant of the Volt, the Cadillac ELR coupe, last year. GM plans to restyle the Volt for the 2016 model year.
