General Motors Co.'s Adam Opel unit is developing an all-electric powertrain option for its new Karl five-door hatch, according to Autobild magazine.

The piston-powered version of the car, named after Opel's founder, will go on sale this summer. It will be joined by a rebadged version called the Vauxhall Viva in the U.K.

Opel said previously it intended to develop an EV. The electrified Karl will succeed the costlier and unpopular Ampera, a rebadged version of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid. The EV is expected to debut in late 2018, Autobild says.
