PSA Group’s Opel unit is introducing a new severance package offer for all its employees in Germany in an effort to further reduce its headcount and lower operating costs.
The package, which Opel did not describe in detail, supplements partial retirement and early retirement programs implemented by the company in December.
PSA has complained since acquiring Opel from General Motors Co. in August that the company’s factories are far less efficient than PSA’s plants in France. PSA underscored the need for reform by excluding German facilities in a European powertrain investment plan unveiled last week.
PSA said at the time that it would invest in plants and products in Germany, but only if it can negotiate “competitive structures.” Opel’s works council responded by demanding “constructive proposals” from PSA.
