Atlanta-based Novelis Inc. plans to invest $180 million to double its capacity to produce automotive aluminum body sheet at the company’s plant in Changzhou, China.
The expansion is expected to add about 100,000 metric tons of capacity and 160 jobs at the facility. Production will ramp up in 2020 to support planned customer product launches, Novelis says.
The 4-year-old Changzhou plant currently is running at full capacity on its existing automotive finishing line.
Novelis, a part of India's Aditya Birla Group, anticipates that global demand for automotive aluminum will nearly triple over the next eight years. The company says the largest growth will occur in China to support vehicle lightweighting efforts in both traditionally powered cars and electrified models.
Novelis has no plans to export aluminum from the facility to the U.S. Earlier this year the Trump administration imposed 10% tariffs on aluminum imports from select countries, including China.
