Atlanta-based aluminum producer Novelis Inc. has abruptly removed former Ford Motor Co. executive Philip Martens, its president and CEO for the past four years.

Novelis appointed Steve Fisher, its chief financial officer, as interim president, effective immediately. The company is launching a search for a permanent CEO. Novelis did not explain why it fired Martens. A spokesman tells Reuters the change in leadership does not indicate a change in strategy.

A part of India's giant Aditya Birla Group, Novelis has become a major supplier of rolled aluminum sheet to the auto industry. The company supplies Ford with sheet stock used in the company's aluminum-intensive F-150 pickup truck.

Martens headed Ford product development until leaving the carmaker in 2005. He joined Novelis as chief operating officer in 2009 and became CEO in 2011.
