Nissan Motor Co. has named Mayra Gonzalez, currently its regional vice president of sales and marketing in Mexico, to take over as president of Nissan Mexicana on July 1. She will be the first woman to run a country unit for the company.

Gonzalez, 39, will succeed Airton Cosseau, 50, who has been assigned as vice president of Dongfeng Motor Co. and managing director of Dongfeng Nissan Passenger Vehicle Co.

Gonzalez and Cosseau have helped defend Nissan’s market-leading share in Mexico for 83 consecutive months. Last year the company controlled 26% of the market, Nissan’s share in any national market worldwide, according to Automotive News.

Nissan’s sales in Mexico climbed 15% to a record 357,900 units in the fiscal year ended March 31.
