Nissan Motor Co. will add airbags to its Datsun Go small car in India this summer after the car failed crash tests by the U.K.-based Global New Car Assessment Program.
The Go meets India's rudimentary safety standards. But Global NCAP gave the car a zero rating last November, declaring the Go a "grave risk" to its occupants and asking Nissan to stop selling the model. Maruti Suzuki India's Swift minicar also received a zero rating in the tests.
The United Nations-approved NCAP tests aim to set global minimum safety performance standards for passenger vehicles, regardless of local requirements.
India's Economic Times cites sources who say Nissan is using stronger steel in the Go and will add side door crash beams to fortify the passenger compartment.
