Nissan Motor Co. will introduce a series-hybrid version of its Serena minivan next spring in Japan.

The Serena e-Power will be Nissan’s second model to feature the technology, which was launched last year in the Note hatchback in Japan. The drivetrain teams a front axle-mounted electric motor and lithium-ion battery with a small gasoline engine.

Unlike the Chevrolet Volt and other extended-range series hybrids, there is no plug-in capability to charge the battery pack. That is done entirely by the engine in Nissan e-Power models. Fuel efficiency is said to be comparable to that of a conventional hybrid vehicle.

Nissan will announce more details at this month’s Tokyo auto show, where it will publicly unveil the Serena e-Power. The vehicle also will feature the latest version of Nissan’s ProPilot semi-autonomous driving technology.
