Next month Nissan Motor Co. will begin recalling 226,300 vehicles in the U.S. to replace passenger-side front airbag inflators that could explode in a crash and spray metal fragments into the passenger compartment.
The campaign targets inflators supplied by Takata Corp. It covers 2002-2003 Maxima sedans, Pathfinder SUVs, Infiniti I35 sedans and QX large crossovers; 2002-2004 Sentra small sedans; and 2003 model Infiniti FX midsize crossovers.
Nissan agreed in June to join six other carmakers in a recall recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. At least 10 carmakers have called back about 10.5 million vehicles worldwide in the past five years to replace faulty Takata airbag inflators.
