Nissan Motor Co. says its redesigned 2013 Pathfinder SUV is 500 pounds lighter and 30% more fuel efficient that this year's model. The model arrives in dealer showrooms this autumn.
More aerodynamics, a unitized body and a continuously variable transmission contribute to the efficiency improvement, according to Nissan. The base front-drive model weighs 4150 lbs; the four-wheel-drive model is 140 lbs heavier. Both lead their market segments in U.S. fuel economy ratings, according to the company.
Towing capacity for the seven-passenger Pathfinder drops to 5,000 lb from 6,000 lb for the previous model. Nissan says the lower capacity is still best in the segment.
The 2013 Pathfinder is powered by Nissan's widely used 3.5-liter V-6 engine that delivers 260 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque through Nissan's next-generation Xtronic CVT transmission. The new powertrain replaces the previous base system: a five-speed automatic transmission and 4.0-liter V-6 that makes 266 hp and 288 lb-ft of torque. The previous model's optional 5.6-liter V-8 (310 hp and 388 lb-ft of torque) has been dropped.
Interior features include dual-panel moon roof, reclining third-row seats, second-row seats with 5.5 inches of travel and a customizable 4-inch drive-assist screen mounted in the instrument panel between the speedometer and tachometer.
Nissan will produce the new Pathfinder at its plant in Smyrna, Tenn. The vehicle's engine is being built in Decherd, Tenn.
