Nissan Motor Co. is developing a two-seat electric car aimed at urban dwellers, reports Automotive News Europe.
Like similar tandem-seat concepts, the tiny car will combine the agility and size of a scooter with the comfort and protection of a fully enclosed body, according to Etienne Henry, who heads Nissan's product strategy and planning.
He tells ANE a major objective is to make the car as compact as possible while providing a carlike environment for the occupants.
Henry describes the EV as Nissan's "optimized" version of alliance partner Renault SA's electric Twizy. The 1,000-lb Twizy offers a choice between two electric powertrains, one of which does not require a driver's license to operate in most European countries.
Nissan's tandem two-seater is likely borrow technology and perhaps styling from the Land Glider concept unveiled by the company at the Tokyo auto show in 2009. That vehicle, which is powered by two rear-mounted electric motors, leans into corners like a motorcycle. Nissan described the Land Glider at the time as a "clear" preview of a car it was considering for production.
