Nissan Motor Co. has begun building its Leaf electric sedan in Sunderland, England. The factory also makes lithium-ion batteries for the car.

The European Leaf debuted at the Geneva auto show earlier this month. The car will replace the original model imported from Japan when deliveries from the U.K. begin in June.

About 90% of the car's content will come from European suppliers, according to Nissan. The new model has 14% more range and several design updates, including a sportier suspension. The company claims it has reduced the EV's production cost by one-third, in part by switching from aluminum to steel for the car's doors.

Nissan, which hoped for 9,000 Leaf sales in Europe last year, sold an estimated 5,200 units in the region in that period.
