Japan’s Nidec Corp. says it will build factories in Mexico and Poland to make propulsion motors for electric vehicles.
The new plants will supplement the 30 billion-yen ($274 million) facility Nidec is erecting in China. The Japanese supplier says it decided to broaden its production base because of uncertainties caused by the simmering trade war between the U.S. and China. All three facilities will make integrated motor/gearbox/inverter systems.
Best-known for tiny motors used to spin computer hard drives, Nidec intends to turn EV traction motors into a core product line. The company hopes the motors will generate 100 billion yen ($900 million) in revenue in fiscal 2022 and double that amount by 2025.
