The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is adding automatic braking systems to its list of recommended safety technologies.

The agency will endorse two types of braking systems. So-called crash imminent braking applies emergency braking to prevent a collision or reduce the speed of impact when the driver has failed to apply any braking. Dynamic brake support increases braking force when the driver brakes, but not hard enough to avoid a crash.

NHTSA says such systems won't affect its five-star ratings, which are based on a vehicle's performance in rollover and crash tests.

One-third of reported crashes involve a rear-end collision, according to the agency. It says a large proportion of drivers in those crashes either didn't apply the brakes at all or didn't apply them fully.
