The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into consumer complaints that taillamp modules in 2008-2009 Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedans may short out and catch fire.
The preliminary probe covers about 218,000 vehicles. NHTSA says several reports mention overheated electric connectors that melt, smoke or burn in either or both assemblies.
The agency notes that a connector failure could cause the taillamps, brake lights or turn signals to dim or not illuminate at all.
