The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 14 complaints about Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV rollaways occurring after the vehicle's transmission has been placed in Park.
The probe covers about 408,000 vehicles from the 2014-2015 model years. All affected SUVs are equipped with an electronic "shift-by-wire" gear selector lever rather than a mechanical shift lever.
Complaints say the vehicles may not lock the transmission in Park when the electronic selector is used, allowing the SUVs to roll away whether the engine is on or off. Observers point out that engaging the vehicle's parking brake would prevent a rollaway in either case.
NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation is determining the scope of the issue to determine if a recall is needed.
