Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz unit is developing an updated version of its all-electric B-Class small car that can go 500 km (310 miles) on a charge more than double that of the current model, according to German media reports.
The current electric B-Class, which features many components developed and supplied by Tesla Motors Inc., has a range of 233 km (145 miles) on the optimistic New European Driving Cycle. Tesla also supplies the current car's 28-kWH lithium-ion battery.
Mercedes is developing most of the new model's electric drivetrain internally, sources tell Auto Motor und Sport. The magazine says the updated system will use an battery sourced externally but not from Tesla.
Daimler divested its 4% stake in Tesla in 2014. Earlier this year the carmaker's Deutsche Accumotive subsidiary began making Mercedes-Benz-branded lithium-ion batteries for stationary energy storage.
