Tesla Motors Inc. says a new and more powerful version of its Model S electric sedan can sprint from zero to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds—or travel 315 miles on a single charge. Tesla says the model is quicker than any other production car in the world.

The company’s previous acceleration king was the Model S P90D, which in “Ludicrous” mode could reach 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. The standard model needs 4.2 seconds to find 60 mph.

The P100D owes its zip to Tesla’s new 100-kWh battery, which also is available in Tesla’s Model X crossover. The option costs $10,000 with vehicle purchase or $20,000 as a retrofit to an already-owned car.

Reconfigured inside but the same size outside, the battery fits in the same space occupied by the 90-kWh unit that continues to power lesser versions of the Model S. Tesla says it is limiting initial production of the battery and making it available only to buyers or owners of its P-series performance models.
