BMW AG is moving forward with plans for two new models—an all-electric sedan and a top-end 9 Series—that could be introduced by 2020, according to media reports.
The new EV, which will be sold as the i6 under BMW’s “i” sub-brand, is expected to be about the same size as a 3 Series car, Automobile Magazine reports. It says two performance variants are being developed: one with two electric motors and another with four motors. The latter will be teamed with a high-capacity, next-generation lithium-ion battery that boosts driving range by 50%, according to the report.
The flagship 9 Series coupe will be built on the long-wheelbase chassis that carries the current 7 Series sedan, Automobile says. Previous reports suggested the new model would share a platform with the aluminum-bodied Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Engine choices could include a twin-turbo V-8, a 650-hp V-12 and possibly hybrid and/or all-electric variants.
