A seventh round of talks to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement will begin outside Mexico City on Feb. 25.
The negotiations among Canada, Mexico and the U.S. are beginning one day earlier than previously announced to accommodate the schedules of the top trade representatives from each country, sources tell Bloomberg News. The round is set to run through March 5.
Talks began in August. Negotiators originally hoped to complete a deal by the end of 2017. But progress has been slow on the most critical issues: local content requirements and the process for resolving trade disagreements among the three countries.
President Donald Trump requested the NAFTA review and threatened to abandon the 24-year-old pact if he isn’t pleased with the results. Earlier this week the White House said progress is being made, especially with Mexico. The administration has been less enthusiastic about Canada’s less conciliatory posture.
