Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will enter two electric vehicles in Colorado's Pike Peak International Hill Climb in July.
The i-MiEV Evolution is a purpose-built four-wheel-drive EV powered by three 107-hp electric motors: one for the front wheels and two for the rears. The array is powered by a 35-kWh battery. The car consists of a carbon-fiber cowl and tube-frame chassis.
MMC's second entry is a stock i-MiEV sedan fitted with a roll bar, added safety equipment and a more aerodynamic front bumper. The car is powered by 16-kWh battery and a single 66-hp motor driving the rear wheels.
The two MMC cars will compete in the electric vehicle class, one of 16 racing categories. The Pikes Peak event, which began in 1916, covers 12.4 miles with 156 turns and an elevation change of 4,700 feet. The first winner completed the course in about 20 minutes. Last year's winner finished in less than 10 minutes.
