Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will unveil a new plug-in hybrid concept at next month’s Tokyo auto show.

The compact crossover vehicle previews Mitsubishi’s next-generation plug-in hybrid architecture. The design will be geared toward smaller vehicles, possibly for the midsize Eclipse, and not for larger models, such as the plug-in hybrid variant of the current Outlander midsize SUV/crossover.
In the Outlander hybrid, MMC teams a 2.4-liter engine with a pair of electric motors and a 13.8-kWh battery.
The new system will feature a dual motor setup to enable all-wheel drive, but the overall system will be smaller and lighter. MMC says the hybrid drivetrain also will be more fuel efficient and provide “engaging” performance attributes.
Earlier this year, Autocar said there will be more differentiation in the next-generation of SUV/crossovers in MMC’s lineup. This includes a greater size difference—at least 200 mm (8 inches) in overall length—among the compact ASX, mid-level Eclipse Cross and top-end Outlander.
