Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is recalling 1,500 turbocharged Lancer and Lancer Evolution sedans built in the last two model years to fix a problem that could cause a fuel tank leak and trigger a fire, according to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
During a routine audit, MMC discovered that the parking brake lever and cable installation procedure for non-turbocharged Lancer based models was mistakenly used for turbocharged models. Due to the difference in length, the right parking brake cable was installed too close to the fuel tank and rubs against it. This wears away a protective coating, which can cause rust and create tiny holes in the tank for fuel to leak out.
Dealers will replace the parking brake cables in recalled vehicles. Fuel tanks also will be inspected and replaced if the protective coating shows signs of abrasive wear.
MMC says it hasn't received any reports of fuel leaks in affected vehicles.
