Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and Japanese mapmaker Zenrin Co. Ltd. are collaborating to produce high-resolution maps of Japanese highways a soon as this year, The Nikkei reports. The 3-D maps can be used by domestic carmakers to speed development of autonomous vehicles.
Mitsubishi Electric unveiled a mapping vehicle, which it calls the Mobile Mapping System, in February. The car uses GPS and lasers to create 3-D maps of roads and the structures adjoining them.
Zenrin and Mitsubishi Electric intend to map 300 km (186 miles) of major roadways in Japan, according to The Nikkei.
